✔ Coke Ovens Dunlap Tennessee Coal Mining Museum and Park • Historic site containing the ruins of 268 Beehive Coke Ovens built in 1902. A two story museum houses coal history of the Sequatchie Valley. • Company Overview • The Coke Ovens Museum and Park are Operated, Maintained and Managed by the Sequatchie Valley Historical Association with an unpaid group of volunteers. The Association is 501c3 non profit organization founded in 1984. Membership is granted to all interested in preserving history of the region with paid membership. No officers, staff or members are paid wages or salaries. • A two story replica of the original company store (92'x46') houses all history of coke production and coal mining in the region including TN, GA, and AL. The park has public restrooms and picnic pavilions for public use, plus extensive walking trails. An outdoor amphitheater is used for the Coke Ovens Bluegrass Festival each June. The Coke Ovens are on the National Register of Historic Places and the Old Hill Road Trail is on the National Register of Historic Places as it was used on the Trail of Tears. The park does not receive City, County, State or Federal funds for operation, but has received past grants from the state. Total of all funds received from state in the last 25 years is less than $15,000.00. Ninety nine percent of all operating funds come from memberships, regular donations and festival donations. • General Information • Last Coke Ovens in the Region were built here between 1902 and late 1916. Coal mining on Cumberland Plateau began in 1899 and ceased in 1927 for this operation. Coke was transported to Chattanooga, TN by NC St.Louis Rail Road, company operated as the Douglas Coal and Coke, Southern Coal and Iron and the Chattanooga Coal and Iron. • Awards • Winner of the 1987 National Take Pride in America award presented at the White House by President Ronald Regan and Secretary of the Interior Don Hodel. • https://www.facebook.com/pg/Dunlap-Co...
