While current estimates place shark biomass at 60% of total fish biomass at Palmyra, these estimates have relied on visual surveys that are plagued by a lack of comparability and reproducibility. Previous abundance estimates are therefore useful to qualitatively describe the relative population size on this pristine reef, but they lack the precision necessary for a quantitative understanding of trophic structure and function. • To address this knowledge gap, the Nature Conservancy and the Palmyra Atoll Research Consortium are collaborating to complete a mark-recapture reef shark population study. The goal of the study is to establish a baseline measure of mature and sub-adult grey and blacktip reef shark abundance absent human impacts.
