Very little is known about the composer Andrea Falconieri. His collection of secular instrumental music has the unwieldy title Il primo libro di canzone, sinfonie, fantasie, capricci, brandi, correnti, gagliarde, alemane, volte. This single printed volume was published in 1650 in the Italian city state of Naples, territory of the Spanish Empire at the time. Falconieri lived in a period of transition between the late Renaissance and the early Baroque eras. • Below are listed titles of my musical selections as well as descriptions of the artworks from the early to mid-1600s. The video's soundtrack is a set of 5 MIDI files that I downloaded from various websites and extensively edited. I hoped to synthesize the sonority of violins, bass viola da gamba, harpsichord, positive organ, cornetti, theorbo and chamber harp by combining sound elements from different digitized instrumental sounds and varying their electronic parameters. • To jump to a specific soundtrack, click on the time stamp indicated next to the song title. The artworks in this video are roughly contemporary with the life of the composer, and they span most of the first half of the 17th century. • 0:10 L'Austria canciona • a.
