Wasn’t lawful to do this themselves. • 2. Again, prophecy was being fulfilled! (i.e. Matt. 20:17-19) • a. Kind of death He was to die. (John 12:32-33) • b. Crucifixion was under Roman law. • II. FRAMED POLITICAL ACCUSATION. (John 18:33-40) • A. A King? (18:33) • 1. Note also Luke 23:1-2. • 2. Treason -- a great crime! • [Remember when Herod heard of His birth. Matt. 2:1-4, 16] • 3. Did they really desire to protect the Roman government? • B. Whose Charge Or Report Was This? (18:34) • 1. What if it had a Roman source? • 2. Remember Gallio in Corinth. (Acts 18:14-15) • 3. Did Jesus acknowledge Roman authority? (Note Matt. 22:21) • 4. No simple “Yes” or “No”. • a. What “yes” could mean. • b. What “no” would be. • C. Jesus’ Kingdom: Of A Different Nature Origin! (18:35-37) • 1. He came for this reason! • 2. Different sword! (Eph. 6:17) • 3. Greater boarders! • 4. One of eternal nature! (2 Pet. 1:11) • 5. One wholly in relation to truth! • 6. Are we remembering where our true citizenship rests? (Phil. 3:20-21) • D. “What Is Truth?” (18:38) • 1. Unbelief asks with contempt. • 2. Skepticism asks doubting. • 3. Inquiry asks with interest. • 4. Faith asks. • 5. What marks our attitude in the search? (John 8:31-32) • E. Pilate’s Attempt To Set The Matter Aside! (18:38-40) • 1. He saw no basis for a guilty charge! (vs.38) • a. He would reiterate it again. (John 19:4 6) • b. He saw envy behind their objective. (Matt. 27:18) • 2. The customary prisoner release! (vss.39-40) • Closing: Remember, It Was Not Only Barabbas’ place that Jesus Took! • (Isaiah 53:5-6)
