Speak to it, suggests John Broughton, new owner of Thurnley Abbey. During a Mediterranean crossing, Broughton's friend Alistair Colvin recounts to a fellow passenger his experience visiting Thurnley... • Perceval Landon (1869–1927) was an English journalist and travel writer, little remembered today except for this one story. 'Thurnley Abbey' was first published in McClure's Magazine in 1907; however it was rewritten and published in Landon's 1908 collection, 'Raw Edges', and the revised version is the text which we know today. • Man-size in Marble | Edith Nesbit | 1887 | 00:46:38 • A Halloween ghost story: a young couple enjoy a life of bliss in their remote country cottage, and even make use of the local legends of things that walk to earn some money by writing. But when All Saint's Eve arrives, they find that one of the legends may not be simply an old wives' tale... • Although best remembered today for her children's stories, including The Railway Children, Edith Nesbit (1858–1924) also wrote several novels and numerous short stories for adults, many of them with a horror or supernatural theme. • The Corpse Light | J. E. Preston Muddock | 1899 | 01:25:35 • The old and half-ruined windmill on a remote stretch of highroad has inevitably become the home of bats and owls – and, according to local legend, of something more fearsome than either... • James Edward Preston Muddock (1843–1934) was an incredibly prolific author who published stories of horror and mystery under several pseudonyms, including as 'Dick Donovan', the name of his fictional detective. Although largely forgotten today, at his peak in the 1890s his stories rivalled those of Conan Doyle in popularity. • Mr. Mortimer's Diary | Amyas Northcote | 1921 | 02:04:34 • The strange behaviour of Mr. Roger Mortimer puzzled his friends and neighbours at the time, but the man himself and the peculiar circumstances of his demise have long been forgotten. When, after 25 years, his long-lost diary is discovered, the mystery can finally be explained... • Amyas Northcote (1864–1923) was the youngest son of a senior politician of the Victorian era, Sir Stafford Northcote. Scarcely anything is known about his life and work; as an author he's only known to have published one book: a collection of stories entitled 'In Ghostly Company' (1921). • The Tomb of Sarah | F. G. Loring | 1900 | 02:46:01 • During renovation of a west country church it becomes necessary to move one particular tomb, for the safety of the building. Unfortunately it happens to be the one tomb with an inscription warning against disturbing the occupant... • Frederick George Loring (1869–1951) was an English naval officer and author of magazine journalism and short stories, of which this is the only one remembered today. He was born on the Isle of Wight, and followed family tradition by serving in the Navy, eventually retiring as Commander in 1909. • The Kit-Bag | Algernon Blackwood | 1908 | 03:25:41 • Fresh from working on a gruesome murder trial, Johnson stays up late packing his borrowed kit-bag for a Christmas break. But he finds the memory of his recent case difficult to shake off – and he increasingly senses that a sinister presence has joined him in his lonely top-floor chambers... • Algernon Blackwood (1869–1951) was an English author and journalist. In his youth he travelled widely and gained experience in a startling variety of professions, including hotel management, dairy farming, journalism and violin teaching. • Recordings © Bitesized Audio 2019–22.
