This demo day honors the cars and their designers that were innovative or unique for their aerodynamics. The four museum cars featured were the Bugatti 57G, the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, the Plymouth Superbird and the Porsche 917 LH. • The Bugatti 57G was so innovative for its aerodynamics that it was known as the tank. It was very different from the preceding race cars in that the body extended over the wheels. It was powered by a 3.25 liter inline 8 cylinder engine making 200 horsepower. This particular car is incredibly special, for it is 57G chassis 01, the overall winner of the 1937 24 Hours of Le Mans. While there are numerous cars in the museum that are race winners, or whose sister cars were race winners, this is the only overall Le Mans winner in the museum. Dr. Simeone has taken the car to Goodwood in England, and years ago even drove it on the street in Philadelphia. That must have been quite a sight! • The second car featured is perhaps the museum’s most well known car and the favorite of museum members. It is the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe. Not only that, it is chassis CSX2287, the first one built and the only built in the US. Designed by Peter Brock with a kamm tail, the car proved to be very fast at the Bonneville Salt Flats, setting numerous speed records. It also used a duck tail spoiler that would help keep it planted to the track. The Daytona was powered by a 289 cubic inch V8 making 385 horsepower. In 2015, it was sent to Goodwood for a reunion of all 6 Cobra Daytona’s, the first time all of them had been together in exactly 50 years. Curator Kevin Kelly drove it on the Goodwood circuit alongside the other 5 cars, with designer Peter Brock looking on. I’m fortunate to have a small piece of that day, a spark plug used in the car at Goodwood. • The third car is radically for many reasons. It is the Porsche 917 LH or long tail. While short tail 917K’s won Le Mans overall in 1970 and 1971, the long tails had a higher top speed, an incredible 240 miles per hour on the Mulsanne straight. This generation of 917’s was powered by a 600 horsepower 5 liter flat 12 engine. This particular car, 917-043 came second overall at the 1970 Le Mans. It is known as the Hippie for its wonderful purple and green Martini livery. I have little doubt that the modern Porsche color Ultraviolet was inspired by this car and its sister car the 917K hippie. Dr. Simeone has had the car at Daytona Speedway for the Rennsport Reunion. It is perhaps the second or third most popular car in the museum, a regular people’s choice nomination. • Finally, a car that easily weighs what two of the other cars weigh, but just as fast, the Plymouth Superbird. The Plymouth SUperbird was a modified version of the roadrunner, with a point nose cone and a massive rear wing helping it to acievve speeds of over 200 miles per hour. The rear wing was supposedly that tall just so that the trunk could open. In 1969 and 1970, Plymouth Superbirds and the almost identical Dodge Charger Daytonas were dominant in NASCAR. They were especially successfully driven by Richard Petty and Bobby Isaac, who won the 1970 championship. Rule changes for the 1971 season prevented them from competing. This particular Superbird is powered by a 440 cubic inch 7.2 liter V8 producing 375 horsepower. A visitor also brought out his Porsche 991 GT3 RS painted in Gulf Blue. It was appropriate for a demo day featuring aerodynamics, considering its massive rear wing, various vents and the lines through the roof. • Now, enjoy the sights and sounds of these unique looking cars as they are driven by Dr. Simeone and curator Kevin Kelly.
