The Khmer temple complex Phanom Rung is approx. 50 km south of Buriram and 25 km off the Cambodian border. Phanom Rung lies on an about 400 m high extinct volcano. The temple was built between the 10th and 12th centuries under the rule of the Principality of the Mahidharapura dynasty, which was largely independent of Angkor. • It is considered the most beautiful Khmer temple in Thailand and is sometimes referred to as the small Angkor Wat. • We reach the temple over a 160 m long footpath. The Naga bridge, which symbolizes the transition from the secular to the spiritual world, leads to a steep staircase. • A small bridge between four basins forms the entrance to the actual temple. • The finely crafted stone portraits are famous. Phanom Rung liegt auf einem etwa 400 m hohen erloschenen Vulkan. • Erbaut wurde der Tempel zwischen dem 10. und 12. Jahrhundert unter der Herrschaft des Fürstentums der Dynastie Mahidharapura, die weitgehend von Angkor unabhängig war. • Er gilt als der schönste Khmer Tempel in Thailand und wird auch schon einmal als das kleine Angkor Wat bezeichnet. • Über einen 160 m langen Fußweg erreichen wir den Tempel. Den Übergang zu einer steilen Treppe bildet die Naga Brücke, die den Übergang von der weltlichen in die spirituelle Welt symbolisiert. • Eine kleine Brücke zwischen vier Bassins bildet den Eingang in den eigentlichen Tempel. • Berühmt sind die feinen Steinbildnisse.
