Super cases and Transitional references are mentioned with casual indifference to those who may be new to the scene. thewatchbox.com breaks down the distinction between a current ref. 116610LN Super Sub and a gorgeous reference 16800 Transitional Submariner from the mid-1980s. • Although each watch measures 40mm according to Rolex, the distinctions between the fit, feel, and appearance of the two Submarines is as stark as night and day at the 24 Hours of Daytona. • Consider the lug-to-lug measurements: • 1.) Rolex Submariner 116610LN: 48mm + 4mm of solid end-link overhang = 52mm • 2.) Rolex Submariner 16800: 48mm. The hollow end links feature insertion points for the ends of the bracelet; unlike the solid-end link 97200 bracelet of the Super Case Rolex Sub, the hollow end-links reference 93150 bracelet of the Submariner 16800 do not extend the effective span of the watch's case. • The key distinctions between the watches are discussed at length in the video showcase, but the key differences involve width at the lugs, total mass, the size of the crown guards, and the additional lug-to-lug span created by the solid end links of the 116610. • See both Rolex Submariners and a broad range of contemporary and vintage Rolex watches at www.theWatchBox.com. • Video and content by Tim Mosso
