These techniques were often called game, because of their playful nature. The goal of these techniques was to create a situation where the artist wasn't in complete control of his actions, but rather that the artists hand or the painting itself was being controlled by some other force. In this respect true surrealist painting shouldn't be an attempt to just mimic the style in which something is painted, but also putting ine's mind into the right headspace where these types of synchronicities can occur.
