Bono introduces “One:” “We all know there’s a lot of darkness out there, but there is a light that shines in the darkness. And darkness can never put it out.” Well put. Love triumphs over hate, good wins out over evil. We need to look to the light. Ironically, looking closer at the lyrics and the band’s explanations, “One” really seems to be more about love painfully sputtering out. Bono explained “The song is a bit twisted, which is why I could never figure out why people want it at their weddings. I have certainly met a hundred people who’ve had it at their weddings. I tell them, ‘Are you mad? It’s about splitting up!’” But in another twist of irony, “One” might be the song that stopped U2 from splitting up as the band was having a tough time creatively, tons of personal and interpersonal issues, taking themselves too seriously, and maybe no longer on the leading edge of relevancy with some less-well received albums. The Edge came up with some chord sequencing while working on the bridge for “Mysterious Ways” and played them for the band. Bono improvised some lyrics, and within about 30 minutes the band had the basics of “One” hammered out. After spending a couple of months in Berlin right after the fall of the wall and Germany’s reunification, U2 finally had their breakthrough to build a new sound and a new album around. Says the Edge: It was a pivotal song in the recording of the album, the first breakthrough in what was an extremely difficult set of sessions. • U2 has offered many explanations for the song, and many writers have offered even more, but some of the most persistent seem to be, and according to Bono at one point, that it’s two intersecting conversations. The first is a son telling his religious father that he's gay, and maybe that he has AIDS. The second is a woman in a sexless marriage who has been caught cheating. Given all the disunity surrounding the song’s potential meaning, it is ironic that it is often an anthem for oneness. And while U2 has called out that irony, they seem to embrace the oneness interpretation too (check the opening quote above (0:01). The Edge puts a little more positive spin on it: The lyric was the first in a new, more intimate style. It's two ideas, essentially. On one level it's a bitter, twisted, vitriolic conversation between two people who've been through some nasty, heavy stuff: 'We hurt each other, then we do it again.' But on another level there's the idea that 'we get to carry each other.' 'Get to' is the key. 'Got to' would be too obvious and platitudinous. 'Get to' suggests it is our privilege to carry one another. It puts everything in perspective and introduces the idea of grace.” • Regardless of meaning, it’s a great song! It charted top 10 in both the UK and US, and lead to the band’s resurgence with Achtung Baby. And U2 performed the entire Achtung Baby album at this concert, along with another eight or so favorites.
