Hadija Namale is the stage name of Jane Frances Kiryangokibi, a Ugandan singer, composer, guitarist and accomplished conga drums player. In this song, Hadija liberally samples Tabu Ley Rochereau's Mama Ida. • • Namale started her music career in the mid 1960s, singing some of the sweetest songs that defined the 60s/early 70s era. She played with Suzana Band, Top Ten Jazz Band, and occasionally sang at White Nile Club. Namale has sung with most of the giants of Uganda's 1960s music fraternity - Juma Odundo, Eclas Kawalya, Fred Masagazi (In the 1970s she was the only female member of Fred Kanyike's Rwenzori International Band, and with the Rwenzori toured the US, Belgium, France, and Japan. Among her great songs are Bbosa and Mukulike omwaka , which can be heard on the YouTube channel of Ugandareport; Zozo, Nakiryowa, and John (these can be heard on Josephine Kiwanuka's YouTube channel). • • Fun facts about Hadija Namale: • She is a gifted polyglot - speaks Luganda, Dholuo, Swahili, Lingala, English, and you would never guess ... Japanese! Yes, she has fond memories of visiting Mount Nasu, and how it reminded her of Uganda's Rwenzori mountain. • She stayed in Japan for about a year • Namale is from a musical family, and one of her uncles was a prominent musician at the King of Buganda's court • She has a beautiful daughter, who is a great singer. Alas, her musical career never took off. • Hadija Namale entertained African heads of state attending the Organization of African Union (OAU) summit in Kampala, July 28 to August 1, 1975. The local and foreign dignitaries were impressed by her singing and mastery of the stage. The Seychelles representative could not resist joining her on stage and together they belted out Guantanamera! • • • Photo: Hadija Namale (left) and daughter • • - video upload powered by https://www.TunesToTube.com
