Ticagrelor is an antiplatelet drug which prevents platelet activation aggregation. It is used along with low-dose aspirin (75-100mg) to prevent thrombotic events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). It is also used to prevent heart attack or stroke after certain heart surgeries like stent placement, CABG=coronary artery bypass graft, or angioplasty. It’s dose is – • 90mg twice a day for the first year. After that 60mg twice a day. • Do not stop taking ticagrelor without doctor’s advice. Because discontinuation of ticagrelor increases the risk of heart attack/stroke. • Side effects of Ticagrelor are- • 1. Dyspnea=shortness of breath • 2. Gastrointestinal bleeding • 3. Blood disorder bleedings • 4. Hyperuricaemia=excess uric acid in the blood • 5. Dizziness • Clopidogrel and ticagrelor belongs to same class (i.e. P2Y12 platelet inhibitor) but ticagrelor is superior to clopidogrel in the prevention of thrombotic events.
