Hear from Professor Graham Reed, Silicon Photonics Group Leader at the University of Southampton, and Dr Andrew Rickman, Chairman and CEO of Rockley Photonics, on their work together under the EPSRC Prosperity Partnership. • Together, their aim is to improve the speed of the internet while at the same time reducing its power consumption. • Internet traffic is handled in data centres the structure of which has historically been electronic but is now moving toward optical. There is a need to bring the electronics and photonics closer together, and doing that requires a low cost, efficient optical material. • That material is silicone. • Professor's Graham Reed's team are experts in silicon photonics, while Rockley has a team covering the whole data centre architecture.
