They are all known and famous. The Sahara is the most famous of all and they even say that it is the largest in the world. But it is not so the Sahara is not the largest desert in the world. • Deserts are one fifth of the earth's surface and are found on all continents. If a place receives less than 25 centimeters of rain per year it is considered a desert. • With 14.2 million square kilometers of ice, Antarctica is ranked as the largest desert in the world. As you hear, these are not sand dunes, they are covered in dense sheets of perpetual ice. With 60ºC below zero, the area called the McMurdo Dry Valleys. • It is practically inaccessible, totally alone, strong winds suck all the moisture out of the air. Antarctica is the fourth largest continent and is the coldest and most inhospitable continent on the planet.
