This video is a demonstration of the nasal aspirate procedure. • TRANSCRIPTION • Speaker: • 00:03 Specimen collection should be performed by health care personnel who have completed training and demonstrated competency. Always read the manufacturer’s package insert for specific instructions regarding specimen collection and transport for the type of test kit being used. • • 00:19 Personal protective equipment (PPE), including a lab coat, mask (surgical, dental, medical procedure, isolation or laser mask), eye protection and gloves should be worn at all times when collecting a respiratory specimen. • • 00:34 Open the sterile aspirate kit and attach the tube to the syringe. Lubricate the tube using the lubricating jelly provided in the kit. • • 00:43 Before beginning the procedure, confirm that the patient does not have a deviated septum or any nasal obstruction. • • 00:51 Have the patient lay down with their head tilted back and neck extended to allow for the pooling of the aspirate in the nasopharynx. • • 01:00 Instruct the patient to hold their breath and not to swallow during the procedure. • • 01:06 Insert the tube the distance between the nose and the ear into the nostril aiming posteriorally along the floor of the nasal cavity until reaching the posterior wall of the nasopharynx (Please note: When performing a nasal aspirate/nasal wash on an infant, the distance of the tube insertion must be adjusted). • • 01:25 Do not insert the tube upwards. • • 01:28 If an obstruction is encountered, try the other nostril. • • 01:31 Using a smooth motion and without moving the tube, quickly push and then pull the syringe plunger to expel and aspirate the saline. • • 01:40 Carefully remove the tube from the nose. • • 01:42 If you feel resistance while aspirating the tube may be suctioned against the wall of the nasopharynx, if this occurs, retract the tube slightly and try again. • • 01:52 Perform the test according to the manufacturer’s instructions. • • 01:55 If specimen testing is not performed at the point-of-care, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for transport and storage recommendations. Follow the standard operating procedures of transport and testing for your facility. • • 02:08 All biohazardous waste disposal procedures should be followed for your facility. • Learn more here: http://www.copanusa.com • Connect with us! • Facebook: www.facebook.com/copan.usa • Twitter: @CopanUSA • Instagram: copan_usa • LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/copa... • The views and opinions expressed in these videos are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect COPAN's official policy, recommendation or position.
