The Motor Effect Physics Experiment

The motor effect, also known as the catapult effect, causes a conducting wire to experience a force within a magnetic field. In this demonstration of the motor effect, I place a strip of aluminum foil in a horseshoe magnet and connect the foil the a power supply. When current passes through the foil (conductor), it experiences a force due to the magnetic field and 'jumps' out of the horseshoe magnet (kind of like being thrown out from a catapult). When I reverse the direction of current, the foil gets pushed down the horseshoe magnet. • #physics #gcse #alevel
