A princess in training, a surfing legend, Dr. Jekyll, and Sherlock Holmes. Bet you didn't expect those last two... • This is the second installment in the story of Princess Ka‘iulani of Hawai‘i. In this episode, we see what happens when the white planters challenged Ka‘iulani's uncle, King Kalākaua...and won. With a kingdom changing before their eyes, Kalākaua and her father Archie sent Ka‘iulani to England for her education. • When the king gave her permission to leave the country, he specified that she was to come home in 1890. But that’s not what happened. Not by a long shot. By the time she set foot on Hawaiian soil again, she was a worldwide celebrity...and a player in the fight for her country’s survival. • But how do you learn to be a queen? And what do you do when your destiny seems out of reach...over 7,000 miles away? And what the heck does Sherlock Holmes have to do with this? Maybe nothing...but we should ask Ka‘iulani's father to be sure. Check out the chapter Father Knows Best for that little tidbit. ;) • Stay tuned for part 3, where we see the second of her mother Likelike's deathbed predictions come true. • 🎞️ Part 3 is now available here: • Part 3: Princess Ka‘iulani of Hawai‘i • #princesskaiulaniofhawaii #hawaiianroyalty #womeninhistory • Chapters • ========= • 00:00 Introduction • 00:59 The Bayonet Constitution • 07:27 Only the Lonely • 10:42 The Write Stuff • 14:09 Boarding School Blues • 20:04 The Crown Princess Diaries • 24:09 Father Knows Best • 29:30 Independent Study • 34:11 The Hope of Hawai‘i • 38:55 Credits • Sources • ======== • There are a lot! I even made an audio supercut cheat-sheet of pronunciations to study clipped from interviews, broadcasts, podcasts, and more. I'm afraid I'll never get Kalākaua right, despite hours and hours of attempting it and re-recording. Out of respect for the Hawaiian language and what its native speakers have been through, I'm determined to keep trying. I apologize for anything I got terribly wrong. • FIND ME ONLINE • =============== • 💻 Check out the site: • https://girlinthetiara.com/ • 💵 Support my research into little-known royal women...and unlock bonus content on Patreon: • / girlinthetiara • 📬 Join the mailing list to get Grand Duchess Louise of Baden's meatloaf recipe: • https://girlinthetiara.com/mailing-list/ • ABOUT THE GIRL IN THE TIARA • ========================== • I tell stories about fascinating royal women. Join me as I follow these women and their jewels across generations and countries, through wars and revolutions and — sometimes — into darkness and disappearance and destruction. • This isn't the kind of history your professor lectured about. Instead, think of this as conversational history, like a mash-up of Drunk History and The Crown. Yes, there's a little swearing. There's also humor and heart and a boatload of compassion for these amazing royal women. • ABOUT ME • ========= • I never intended to start a channel or a website about tiaras and royal history. But a midlife crisis forced me to re-examine my life. I gave up fiction writing after self-publishing 9 of the 10 books I'd written and earning next to nothing. • Instead of the misery of marketing books, I turned to my first love...royal history. So here I am, a 40-something burnout, trying to start over by recapturing her love of history, royal women, and their jewels.
