He was the 1st Duke of Wellington, contributed enourmously in the War of the Peninsular, defeated Napoleon luckily at Waterloo, and also fought with distinction in India. • Beginning as a restless gambler, this man turned out to become one of the most important characters in the beginning of the 19th Century. • Extra facts! • Once he moved into Spain in 1810, he depended much on the Spanish soldiers as his allies. In a battle, he got 1600 wounded British. Meanwhile Marshal Soult was marching South to cut off his route to Portugal. Wellesley left the battlefield and his 1600 wounded, leaving them to Spanish treatment, in order to stop Soult. He did so successfully, but once returning to the battlefield, the Spanish commander had retreated and left all the British wounded to the French.
