THIS PART IS FOR YOUR FAVORITES! • Miss Shirley Verrett in this collection? Please let us know your opinion! • • Shirley Verrett, Mezzo-Soprano and Soprano (1931-2010) • • Giuseppe Verdi - MacBeth • Vieni! T´affretta! - Or tutti sorgete • With Giovanni Foiani, Bass • (Recorded 1976) • • My personal opinion: In the post-World War II era, several generations of American singers emerged prominently on US and international opera stages. As never before, African American women were among those numbers, having been inspired by the success of Dorothy Maynor and Marian Anderson. Among those were names like Leontyne Price, Grace Bumbry and Shirley Verrett (And Martina Arroyo, who suddenly vanished from the international platform). • Shirley Verrett emerged as an international opera singer by the mid-1960s as a highly sought-after Carmen, but performed over forty roles in her long career. Throughout this career, Miss Verrett performed both major female roles in the same opera (in different productions) including Aida and Amneris, Norma and Adalgisa, and her history-making performance in Berliozs epic Les Troyens where she sang Cassandra and Dido on the same night at the Metropolitan Opera. In 1957, Verrett made her operatic debut in Britten's The Rape of Lucretia . In 1962, she received critical acclaim for her Carmen in Spoleto, and repeated the role at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1963, and at the NY City Opera in 1964. Verrett first appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 1966 as Ulrica in Un Ballo in Maschera . She made her debut at the Met in 1968 with Carmen and at La Scala in 1969 in Samson and Dalila . Verrett's mezzo roles included Cassandra and Didon (Berlioz), Amneris, Eboli, Dalila, Azucena, Leonora in La Favorita , Gluck's Orpheus (one of the best you can find on records), and Rossini's Neocles (L'Assedio di Corinto). Just as Grace Bumbry (who surprisingly received only three votings for part II of 100 Singers) Miss Verrett began in late 1970s to tackle soprano roles, including Selika in L'Africaine , Lady Macbeth, Madame Lidoine in Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites , Tosca, Norma, Leonore (Fidelio), Iphigénie, Alceste, Médée (Cherubini), Desdemona, and Aida. In 1990, Verrett sang Dido in Les Troyens at the inauguration of the Opera Bastille in Paris. In 1994, she made her Broadway debut in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel , playing Nettie Fowler. Miss Verrett´s voice was slim in comparison with Grace Bumbry and Leontyne Price, but she was much admired for her radiance, beauty, and great versatility. With four votings (one more than Miss Bumbry), Miss Verrett found her place on position number 37. And of course I would like to present her with one of her greatest creations, Verdis Lady MacBeth. It´s from the famous 1976-Abbado-recording with Cappuccilli. Alan Blyth wrote: Cappuccilli and Verrett seem to be communing with themselves and with us in the privacy of our home; Milnes and Cossotto on EMI are more extrovert, directing their interpretations to the mid-stalls. • Miss Shirley Verrett died November 5, 2010 • • THE COMPLETE OVERVIEW: GO TO ALL SINGERS IN THIS LIST •    • Video
