Shardul Gagare became India's 42nd GM in January 2016. He was just 18 years old when he achieved the feat. A lot was expected of Shardul, but he suddenly reduced the number of tournaments he was playing. At the Goa GM 2019 he is back and now playing some fine chess. In round 7 he managed to beat IM K. Ratnakaran with a blistering attack. • We were keen to not only know Shardul's calculations in the game, but were also interested to learn why he had stopped playing chess for such a long period. It turns out that Shardul had spent some of his time finishing to reach third year in B.A, but majority of his time was spent in finetuning his opening repertoire! Yes, you read it right, he was working on the first phase of the game very seriously.
