This was shocking news for my sisters and I who are the children of an Evangelical Pastor. Our father, James, was obsessed with Israel and Jewish culture after studying in Israel for a year in college. My father was adopted and had no idea what his ethnicity was. He would have been thrilled to find out he had Jewish heritage, unfortunately at the time we made this discovery he was already in the advance stages of early onset dementia. I set out to find his biological family and learn how much Jewish Ancestry we actually had. As I dig in to my father’s past, I also reflect upon my conservative evangelical upbringing and why I chose to leave the church.
