The Island Strum is based on the basic down-up strum, so it's important to be able to play that strum smoothly before you start incorporating the rests in the Island Strum. • The Island Strum pattern is down - rest - down - up - rest - up - down - up. • When you're still getting the hang of it, it can feel like you should be speeding up the strumming around the rests, but each down strum, up strum, and rest should get an equal amount of time. Start out slowly, practicing the strum with one chord (I recommend saying the strum pattern aloud as you play it), then work your way up to making chord changes and pairing it with a song.
