I'm a neuropsychiatrist. Well, depression is a symptom. If I have chest pain, that's a symptom. But what's causing the chest pain? It could be I'm having a heart attack or I'm having pneumonia, or I have broken ribs. So, when people talk about depression, you need to really be more specific about what parts of my brain are causing the depression. Depression and anxiety often go together. When people are depressed, they tend to be hopeless, they tend to feel helpless, they tend to feel worthless. It can affect their appetite. It can affect their sleep. It can affect your focus and concentration and memory. These are the so-called neuro-vegetative signs of depression. • And in older people, it can get to the point where they're so depressed, they appear to be demented. This is the pseudodementia of depression that we sometimes see. Causes can be both external causes. We've seen a huge increase in depression and anxiety with the COVID pandemic. That would be an example of an external cause. I'm getting a divorce or my child died, and at some point, there's grief, but then grief sometimes evolves into depression. And then there are internal causes of depression, and that's when you really need to be able to look at someone's brain to understand what parts of the brain are involved in causing this depression and treat it in a much more intelligent way, other than just guessing about what medication to try. • ***
