The strange and eerier call of a Yellow-spotted Rock Hyrax (Heterohyrax brucei) also known as the Dassie! • Dassies spend 95 percent of their day resting and are commonly seen sun basking in the morning and evening, but tend to avoid the midday heat. While sun basking is necessary for thermoregulation (temperature control), it greatly increases their risk of predation. However the dominant male will remain vigilant and keep watch on a high rock. It is from this point that he will give a shrill alarm call if there is danger. • These Rock Hyrax were seen at the Outpost Lodge in a Kruger National Park, a location that is often frequented by the Verreaux's Eagle.
