Scholars agree that the inscription reads Jerubbaal , the nickname the Bible gives Gideon in the book of Judges: • 'So because Gideon broke down Baal’s altar, they gave him the name Jerub-Baal that day, saying, “Let Baal contend with him”' (Judges 6:32). • But how sure can we be that the inscription is referring to Gideon?
