Here is another sneak preview of the drum parts that I recorded for the shortly to be released iGenesis video of the 'Duke Suite' - an epic 29 minute Genesis medley. Keep an eye out for the moment I drop a stick :-) • Please note that the background audio is obviously Genesis themselves, for the purposes of this video! The iGenesis audio is still being mixed. • This was great fun to play, and some of it took a lot of working out - the interplay between Chester and Phil is wild in places. I spent ages trying to work out the best way to play the section at 1:43 to 1:48 - what to get 'Phil' to play and what to get 'Chester' to play. The bass drum here was the hardest part, given the speed, and both are doing different things to achieve the correct (in my view) end result. Also the hi hat work at 1:55 to 2.00 was weird, and I got Chester to open the hat just before the back beat for an 8th note (?), and then had Phil open and close his hat on the 16th note immediately after the back beat - it seemed the only way to get the right soundscape at this point! • For those of you wondering why I have got 'Phil' (the white shirted version of me on the left) in a small screen and 'Chester' on the main screen - (a) most of BTL is Chester and my iMovie skills are not up to changing screen sizes during the video and (b) I have a bunch of students who are about to learn the fast Chester part and I need them to see him more clearly then Phil! I will post a separate video of just the Phil part soon, as I am sure some of you will be interested in the left hand tom work and you can't really see it here :-) • BTW, please put this on full screen and highest quality for best results. And use headphones or good speakers! I have panned 'Phil's' Gretsch kit to left, and 'Chester's' Premier kit to right - until Chester is on his own, then Chester is centred. (For those of you that have forgotten, or don't realise, my v-drums are plugged in to software that replicates vintage Gretsch and Premier drum kits - hence the very sweet sounds!) • There's lots of drumming going on in this, and I don't claim that I am playing the individual Phil and Chester parts as they did it. I DO claim that the soundscape I have created seems to me to be about right though! I hope you notice that the two drummers are sometimes playing differently, and I think it turned out well :-) • This is a tough track to play - and perhaps surprisingly, I would say that Chester's slow section is actually the hardest part. Typical Chester understatement, and deceptively difficult! Obviously Phil's left hand (well, in his case, right hand) tom work is outrageous, and does take some practise, and don't forget you need the ride bell to do its thing at this point too! • I covered this four or five years ago on YouTube - it was one of my earliest vids! I played it with Flix Sticks and played a mix of both drum parts as a single drummer. It is incredible to me how much better I have become - this is a far superior cover to my first one! I love that I am still getting better and better - thanks to all the incredible encouragement and comments I get from every one of you. I am so, so grateful to you all!
