Synthesis Of Benzyl Chloride from Benzyl Alcohol

In this video, I prepare Benzyl Chloride, an Aryl Halide. The procedure I am doing is a simple acid chlorination of the aromatic alcohol Benzyl Alcohol. • This compound can be used to prepare a Grignard Reagent, it can be cross coupled with acrylates, thus it can be used as an arylating agent. • Another interesting reaction which I just found out about after completing this video is The Sommelet Reaction. This reaction yeilds Benzaldehyde in what's described as good yeilds whatever that means. Caviat Emptor I'm sure. (1) • ====================================================== • 1.Nature International Journal of Science: • IN 1913 Sommelet1 observed that when the quaternary compound from benzyl chloride and hexamine is heated in water, or in aqueous alcohol, it is converted in good yield to benzaldehyde. This reaction has become general for the preparation of aromatic aldehydes.
