This second CD that Shmuel Barzilai has recorded for Gramola shines like his first, Areshet Sefateinu , with grande, sophisticated orchestral and choral arrangements by Dr. Mordecai Sobol. The selected compositions and their interpretation by Shmuel Barzilai, with Yedidya-Tzviel Weksler as soloist and duo partner with the SFY Philharmonic Orchestra and choir under the auspicious direction of Dr. Mordechai Sobol, are certainly to be understood as a tribute to the fantastic Jan Peerce and the great cantors of their time such as Sirota, Kwartin and Rosenblatt. This work also serves as a bridge between Jewish tradition and Israeli culture, as the combination of Hasidic and cantoral. • • Listen to the full album here: https://www.gramola.at/en/shop/produk... • • About Shmuel Barzilai, Yedidya-Tzviel Weksler, and Mordechai Sobol • • Shmuel Barzilai, is the chief cantor of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien. Barzilai has a lyrical tenor voice, and studied under cantor Moshe Stern in the Tel Aviv Institute for Cantorial Art. He was in the first graduating class of the Institute, which was established under former Tel Aviv mayor Shlomo Lahat. • • From a very young age, Yedidya began to sing and to mingle in his voice and gradually discovered his talent and vocal abilities, singing cantorial, Hasidic, Israeli, Mizrahi and even original songs he composed together with his father, Rabbi David Weksler. In the last year he has performed three times with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Zubin Mehta at the Tel Aviv Cultural Center. On the Sabbath, he performed with cantors - Zvi Weiss, Cantor of Jerusalem Great Synagogue ; Shai Abramson, the IDF cantor ; Israel Parnas, the greatest Chassidic singer and more. • • The late Mordechai Sobol, who was born in Hadera in 1951 to Polish Holocaust survivor parents, became a cantor at a very young age. In addition, he was also a composer, orchestrator and arranger for cantorial works for soloists and choirs. As the director of the Yuval Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, he raised Jewish liturgical music to new heights. Many of Israel’s promising young cantors studied under him. He recorded several albums, and his concerts in Israel and abroad were always sold out. He was frequently heard on religious radio stations. Sobol was the recipient of several awards, including the Jerusalem Prize and the President’s Prize for Education.
