Located in the county of East Sussex, and around two miles southwest of Rye, is the town of Winchelsea. • The town itself featured in this walk is predated by an earlier settlement that would become known as Old Winchelsea. This became one of the Cinque Ports around the 12th century, when both it and the neighbouring town of Rye were added to the original five (Sandwich, Dover, Hythe, New Romney and Hastings). These were towns across the southeastern coast that provided naval vessels to the Crown in return for tax exemptions and trading privileges. • Old Winchelsea was plagued by a series of storms, the most notable of which was the Great Storm of 1287. This caused catastrophic flooding, destroying so much of the settlement that it was relocated entirely to a planned development built on higher ground, i.e. the current Winchelsea. The town's distinct grid layout is a consequence of its planning in the late 13th century. From the outset, a series of defensive structures were built. These include two town gates featured in the walk, namely The Strand Gate, seen at the very start, and The Pipewell Gate, seen at the end. The latter was rebuilt in the early 15th century due to its predecessor being destroyed by the French during a raid in 1380. • At the heart of the town is the Church of St Thomas the Martyr, dedicated to Thomas Becket. This was planned to be a cruciform church (i.e. cross-shaped), but the nave was never finished, or perhaps destroyed by the French in the 14th century. This is the final resting place of comedian Spike Milligan. • From the 15th century onwards, Winchelsea's role as a port declined due to the silting up of the River Brede which runs adjacent to the town. Maritime trade moved elsewhere as a consequence. • In 1851 the railway arrived in Winchelsea courtesy of the South Eastern Railway. Today, the station forms part of the Marshlink Line which runs between Ashford International and Hastings. • 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 • https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su... • Filmed: 6th June 2024 • Link to the walk on Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/6Uq9wLv7LvP7T... • Filmed on a Sony FDR-AX700 with a Zhiyun Crane 2 and a Sony ECM-XYST1M Stereo Microphone. • TIMESTAMPS: • 0:00 Strand Hill • 2:34 High Street • 4:12 Church of St Thomas the Martyr • 5:32 High Street • 6:08 German Street • 8:10 Back Lane • 9:39 Friar's Road • 11:20 Church of St Thomas the Martyr • 12:19 St Thomas's Street • 13:43 Castle Street • 16:17 North Street • 19:20 Ferry Hill
