Kalemegdan is the largest park in Belgrade and the most significant cultural-historical complex. The name Kalemegdan refers only to the spatial plateau around the fortress, which was turned into a park in the 1880s. The plateau, while the fortress was the main military stronghold of Belgrade, served to observe the enemy and wait for battle. Its name comes from the Turkish words kale ('fortress') and meydan ('battlefield'). The Turks also called Kalemegdan Fićir-bayir, which means 'hill for contemplation'. The rearrangement of the park began after the surrender of the fortress to the Serbs (1867), by order of Prince Mihailo Obrenović. In 1905, the expansion of the park began, arranging Mali Kalemegdan, which stretched from the pavilion 'Cvijeta Zuzorić' to the Zoo. • Before World War I, Kalemegdan Park ended at the place where the stone steps are now (leading to the lower terrace). The land behind these steps was completely unregulated and overgrown with weeds until 1929. After 1931, the park areas were expanded to the Upper Town. There was a kind of fair at Mali Kalemegdan, with a carousel and tents with entertainment activities. Several monuments to famous cultural and public figures were erected in the park. Kalemegdan is home to the Military Museum, the Cvijeta Zuzorić Art Pavilion, the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Belgrade, the Zoo, the Roman Well, a children's amusement park, the Tomb of People's Heroes, a number of sports fields and hospitality facilities, and the Natural History Museum. • The park was damaged during World War I, especially during the heavy Austro-Hungarian bombardment in 1914–1915, prior to occupation. • The Belgrade fortress Kalemegdan, in most cases, is entered from Knez Mihajlova Street.
