Extracting Cannabis with Hydrocarbons • Professor DeBacco • • Description of Hydrocarbon Extraction Method • -Closed loop system, plant material is placed in extraction vessel and a cold hydrocarbon such as butane or propane is washed through the plant material. • -The waxes, fats, and lipids from the cannabis bind to the hydrocarbon, and the plant material is then removed • -The resulting mixture is then cold-boiled in a vacuum and the butane evaporates as butane and propane have very low boiling points • -The resulting extract is then collected. • Resulting Hydrocarbon Extraction End Product • Hydrocarbon extracts come in a variety of forms, textures, and consistencies (based on protocol used) which all are encompassed by the broad term Butane Hash Oil (BHO). • Examples end products are • Shatter • Badder • Crumble • Cannabinoid concentrates average between 80-90% • • Advantages of Hydrocarbon Extraction • Preserves terpene and cannabinoid content very efficiently (compared to other methods) • There are a wide range of extract types that can be achieved through hydrocarbon extraction • Can be done with trim and flower. • Relatively low equipment and run costs • • Disadvantages of Hydrocarbon Extraction • EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, butane and propane are highly flammable and extreme caution must be used when extracting with hydrocarbons. • Unwanted compounds could make it through the extraction process and would need to be later refined. • • • Link to Lecture Slides: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HXee... • *Due to the description character limit the full work cited for Extracting Cannabis With Hydrocarbons can be viewed at... https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eU1M...
