Rheas are flightless birds that live in South America. They are also known as the South American ostrich because they look quite similar to these African cousins, however, they are not an emu nor an ostrich. Rheas are flightless birds like emus and cassowaries. They are smaller in statute than these other birds, but can still reach 5 feet (1.5m) tall. Rhea bird fathers tend to the nest just like emus and cassowaries. There may be up to 30 eggs in a single rhea nest that the male must care for all on his own. Because this is such a huge energy cost to the male, only about 20% of males in the breeding population reproduce in any given year. They have to fight off rivals and then spend months raising their chicks, so it's a huge physical investment to have rhea babies! We hope you learn some facts about rheas in this episode of Animal Fact Files! • Scientific Name: Genus - Rhea • greater rhea (Rhea americana) • lesser rhea (Rhea pennata) • Range: South America • Size: 3.2 to 5 feet tall (1 to 1.5m) • Diet: mostly plant material like seeds and grasses, also insects and small vertebrates • Lifespan: 10-20 years in the wild • ✨ Animal Fact Files Patreon Supporters get early access to videos, get their video requests moved to the top of our request list, and more! ✨ • 👉   / animalfactfiles   • You can learn more on: • Twitter -   / animalfactfiles   • Facebook -   / animalfactfiles   • --- • Rhea SOUTH AMERICAN OSTRICH 0:00 • Rhea VS OSTRICH 0:12 • Rhea VS EMU 0:22 • Rhea SPECIES 0:32 • Rhea FLOCKS 0:52 • Rhea MATING 1:01 • Rhea LIFE CYCLE 1:55 • Rhea LIFESPAN 2:45 • Rhea PREDATORS 2:55 • Rhea BEHAVIOR 3:05 • Rhea DIET 3:20 • Rhea HABITAT 3:38 • Thanks/Outro 3:51 • --- • Image and Video Credits: • What's In John's Freezer? -    • Rhea eating penguin carcass   • after the storm -    • Ñandúes en el norte de Uruguay ( Rhea...   • L.
