Billie Holiday is widely recognized as one of the most renowned jazz singers of all time, but that doesn’t mean that she had an easy life. From her earliest days, Billie had a tough road set out for her. Billie’s parents experienced turbulence during her early childhood. Billie’s father was a jazz musician, and could rarely be found around the house. Likewise, Billie’s mother didn’t have much interest in the young star. She began singing at local jazz clubs, and was eventually scouted by a producer by the name of John Hammond. It was with John’s help that Billie made her first entry on the Top 10 charts, but it wasn’t all a bed of roses for the newfound business pair. As Billie became more and more successful, she ventured further into escapism through drugs and alcohol. • As a performing jazz singer, Billie became married to her trombonist. This was a man by the name of Jimmy Monroe, and he was the one that introduced Billie to the drug that was soon to become her substance of choice: heroin. Throughout her life, the jazz singer was going to have many varying vices, from marijuana to alcohol. However, heroin was the drugs that always kept Billie coming back for more. Billie used the drug to sedate her childhood trauma, but the trauma never truly stayed away once the drugs were gone. • Despite her dependency on substances, there was another tragedy weighing down on Billie’s seemingly illustrious career. This was a man by the name a Harry Anslinger. He was the Chief of the US Federal Bureau of Narcotics, and he had it out for Billie because of her relationships with opiates.
