Hoe begon de Eerste Wereldoorlog? Met de Duitse inval van België in 1914? Volgens het Schlieffenplan moesten de Duitse troepen door België heen trekken om zo Frankrijk te kunnen verslaan. De Duitsers dachten België gemakkelijk in te kunnen nemen tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Dat viel tegen. Al bij Luik stuitten ze op felle tegenstand. Frustraties werden botgevierd op de Belgische burgerbevolking. De Duitsers zagen hen aan voor franc-tireurs (of vrijschutters) met gruwelijke gevolgen.
