Sapa is an essential stop on the itinerary of any tourist visiting Vietnam. Home to the indigenous Hmong tribes, who migrated to Vietnam from China some centuries ago, this gorgeous mountain city attracts hordes of travellers every year. We were fortunate enough to be able to experience the beauty of Sapa without the crowds as Vietnam's borders continue to be closed to foreigners and nobody can visit Vietnam from outside of the country for the foreseeable future. • We were able to learn about one of Vietnam's many indigenous cultures, the Hmong. The Hmong are a mountain tribe who live in northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, China, as well as many in the USA. We were shown around by our fantastic guide, Ms Yao, a young Black Hmong woman who was more than happy to share her culture with us and tell us about the realities of daily life for the indigenous mountain people of northern Vietnam. • Ms Yao told us that, due to the lockdown and restrictions on travel due to the coronavirus, Vietnam's tourism has taken a hit and the people of Sapa are struggling to make money without the foreigners. • We were really lucky to have such an excellent guide to learn about a totally different way of life.
