Francis Levison (the mustachioed snake) aggravates his rich uncle with his spendthrift ways. Severn Isabel have nowhere to go and stay as guests at East Lynne until Severn dies of gout, upon which Isabel learned she doesn’t own East Lynne and she is penniless, and she becomes a ward of her father’s brother Earl Mount Severn and his wife Lady Mount Severn. Isabel and Levison like each other, but Lady Severn also likes Levison so she hates Isabel and treats her cruelly. Carlyle remedies this situation by asking Isabel to marry him, which confuses and upsets Barbara Hare, who loves Carlyle. Isabel and Carlyle marry and have two kids, little Willie and little Isabel. • PART TWO • Barbara Hare’s father Judge Hare forbids her cowardly brother Richard from courting Afy Hallijohn (short for Aphrodite) Unbeknownst to Richard, Afy is also seeing Levison. Levison has an argument with Afy’s father and kills him with Richard’s gun. Richard flees and is convicted for the murder in absentia. • PART THREE • Carlyle’s domineering, spinster sister Cornelia invites herself to live at East Lynne, and she strongly disapproves of Isabel. Heavily indebted Levison convinces Carlyle to let him stay at East Lynne too until his late uncle’s estate is settled. Richard returns and tells Barbara he’s innocent, so she asks Carlyle to help Richard. Levison convinces Isabel that Carlyle’s and Barbara’s secretive meetings mean they are having an affair. • PART FOUR • Convinced of her husband’s infidelity, Isabel runs away with Levison, abandoning her children, and Carlyle divorces her. Levison abandons Isabel and inherits his uncle’s fortune. Isabel is seriously injured in a train wreck. • PART FIVE • Carlyle is told that Isabel died in the train wreck so he marries Barbara, but she dislikes his children. Isabel, on the other hand, dearly misses her children, so she disguises herself with sunglasses and a wig and takes a position as their governess under an assumed name. Levison is arrested for Hallijohn’s murder.
