The SVT-40 (Russian: Самозарядная винтовка Токарева, образец 1940 года, lit. Tokarev self-loading rifle, model of 1940 ) is a Soviet semi-automatic battle rifle introduced in 1940, replacing its predecessor, the SVT-38. It was intended as a replacement for the Mosin-Nagant M91/30 as the Soviet Union's service rifle, but production numbers fell sharply in 1941 and 1942, and only small quantities were produced in 1943 - 1945, with later releases immediately going to the reserve.
