First we ensure we have the plumbing correct for the install by setting the Fully Qualified Domain Name in the file, /etc/hosts. This is needed as the reconfigure routine will create a local database based on the domain name at the end of the install. With that in place we can then proceed with the install and sudo apt-get install -y slapd ldap-utils. At the end of the install you are prompted for the openLDAP administrator password, this ideally should be different to the root password. My server run the UFW firewall so I will open the ldap ports 389. We then see how we can view the database with ldapsearch and add entries with ldapadd.
