I'm Max Dalton, and in this video I'm going to talk through how to upgrade your Netgear wireless router firmware. • Keeping the firmware on your Netgear wireless router up to date is critical. Firmware updates routinely include security enhancements that can protect your router, and ultimately your home network, from being hacked. Additionally, Netgear wireless router firmware upgrades can also include updates to the router's graphical user interface, and occasionally introduce new functionality. To update your Netgear wireless router's firmware, you must log in to your admin account through the Netgear Web portal. • Steps to Upgrade Netgear Wireless Router Firmware • 1. Open your Web browser and navigate to www.routerlogin.com. • 2. Enter the username and password associated with your Netgear wireless router's admin account when prompted. You'll arrive at the Netgear Genie website associated with your router. An i icon and an associated message that a firmware update are available will appear to the right of the Advanced tab if a firmware update is available. • 2. Click the i icon to the right of the Advanced tab if it is present. A message appears on your screen that the Netgear Genie service is attempting to connect to the Netgear server. It may take a few minutes to connect. Eventually, the Firmware Update Assistant appears. The upgrade assistant gives you information about the current GUI language and firmware versions, and what those versions will be after the update. Additionally, the assistant contains notes around any other enhancements. • 3. Click Yes. A message appears on the screen that the wireless router is downloading the new firmware version. After the download is complete, another screen appears showing you the status of updating the router's firmware. After the firmware update is installed, a message appears on the screen telling you that the Netgear router will reboot. While the router is being rebooted you witll lose your Internet connectivity and an error will likely appear on your screen. • 4. Open your Web browser again, navigate to www.routerlogin.com, and enter your admin username and password when prompted. The Netgear Genie home screen appears, and you should no longer see a message that a firmware update is available for your wireless router, which means that your router is up to date.
