Contrary to its fantastical appearance, the remarkable opening in Portugal's Lagoa da Serra da Estrela isn't a mystical portal, but a human-made funnel leading to a lengthy tunnel. Covão dos Conchos, which resembles a natural sinkhole adorned with waterfalls, is actually an impressive feat of engineering. • Created in 1955, this lake in the Serra da Estrela mountains is part of a hydroelectric dam project. Instead of constructing a pipeline to transfer water between Lagoa Serra da Estrela and Lagoa Comprida, engineers opted to bore a tunnel through the mountain, linking the two lakes. • This spillway was designed to supply fresh water to nearby communities. Its isolated location and lack of surrounding constructions lend it an appearance more akin to a natural lake feature than an infrastructure element. Adding to its natural look are plants that have taken root around the edges of its concrete and granite drain pipe. This spillway, which seems like something out of a sci-fi movie, remained relatively obscure in Portugal until it gained widespread attention in 2016 due to viral photos. • Situated in the Serra da Estrela natural park, Covão dos Conchos is remote from major cities. To reach the spillway, there is a hike starting from Lake Comprida, covering approximately 6 miles (10 km). Visitors are advised to carry adequate water and wear suitable footwear for this journey. • Subsribe on Happy Traveler - / @happytravelerhd
