Ranging between 1/16th of an inch to 1/8 of an inch in length (1.5 mm to 3.5 mm). They are usually brown or brownish red colored but can also be black. Their body is hard, shiny and covered in hairs and spines. Being this small is actually an advantage for the flea rather than a disadvantage because it allows the flea to be sneaky in feeding on hosts while avoiding detection. • Fleas have six legs and this allows the flea to be deceptively quick and gives them the ability to jump abnormally high, another advantage when they are on the hunt for a host. Fleas can jump up to seven inches high vertically and can jump far distances in a single bounce, 13 inches horizontally. • • Fleas also have adapted mouthparts which allow them to pierce the skin and suck the blood of a host. Fleas drink a lot of blood mainly because it’s what they need to reproduce. • THE FLEA LIFE CYCLE • In order to conquer a flea invasion in your home, it’s best to understand the flea life cycle and how they operate. Fleas are known for reproducing very quickly. The average female flea can lay about 40 eggs every day, so if you have an infestation of fleas, it can get even bigger in a short period of time. • Fleas undergo a complete metamorphosis. The stages of the life cycle consists of 4 phases: the egg phase, the larva phase, the pupa stage and finally, the adult phase. • THE EGG PHASE • The beginning of the egg phase has to first start with an adult female flea getting a blood meal from their host. Once they get their fill, the female flea will get started on producing eggs, usual within 24 to 48 hours after their blood meal. A flea egg is small and white colored and by the naked eye it would look similar to a grain of sand or even smaller. These eggs may be laid in a pets fur, or if the flea is in a home, they are known to lay eggs in deep down beneath the fibers of rugs and carpets. • • • THE LARVAE PHASE • • When the egg hatches, out comes the flea larvae. The larvae is white and slimy, resembling a maggot. Their diet mainly consists of flea dirt (a term for flea droppings or feces) which the adult fleas leave in the environment. • Flea larvae are about 1 to 2 mm in length and make up about 35 percent of the flea population in the average household. If conditions allow, the larvae will begin to spin cocoons within 5 to 20 days from the moment they hatched. Inside the home, flea larvae often live deep inside furniture or carpeting. • THE PUPAE PHASE • The pupae stage is the stage where the larvae encapsulates itself into a cocoon for the final stage before emerging as an adult flea. The cocoon acts as a protective shell that the pupae stays in anywhere between several days to as long as months or even years before the adult flea emerges. • Cocoons are sticky and when lodged in carpeting they might not be easily picked up by a vacuum or via sweeping. The cocoon is a protective covering is quite strong and protects the developing flea from external forces. • THE ADULT PHASE • Once a flea has emerged from the cocoon, it will need to begin looking for a host and feeding on blood almost immediately. Shortly after their first blood meal, the adult flea will begin to breed and lay eggs within the day and the cycle continues. • Adult fleas account for less than 5 percent of the entire flea population in a home. They spend the majority of their time living on the host while they feed, breed, and lay eggs, and can live anywhere from a couple of weeks to several months on the host animal. • HOW TO TACKLE A FLEA PROBLEM • Now that you have learned about the flea life cycle you can use this knowledge to take fleas down and eradicate the population. Getting rid of fleas indoors will need to involve regular vacuuming for a number of weeks as well as thoroughly washing and heat treating bedding, toys and clothing in hot soapy water to successfully kill fleas in the egg, larvae and pupae stage. Aside from this, the use of high quality professional insecticides will also be needed to kill the flea population (such as Novacide Flea Tick Killer Indoors and Reclaim IT Insecticide to use outdoors as a barrier treatment) • • When it comes to your pets, it will be vital to treat your pets with pet-friendly flea control treatments such as shampoos, sprays, dips, or spot-on medications which we have available for you at Solutions Pest Lawn.
