These bugs prey on common lawn and garden pests, but they have a taste for blood and can often come indoors to feed on animals and people. Though it’s less common, they are known to spread potentially fatal diseases like chagas. • For proper control, you need to identify the kissing bug. The kissing bug is typically around an inch in length. They can vary in color and will often have colorful markings. They are easily identified by their long, tapered head and large fang-like mouthparts. It’s these piercing mouthparts that make them such efficient killers. • Kissing bugs can be found throughout the world. Historically, they have been reported in the Southern two-thirds of the contiguous United States. They can usually be found outdoors around flower beds, mulch, under landscaping rocks, under flower pots, and around yard debris. They are attracted to lights, and can often be lured into your home. • To get control, start outside with a combination of granular and liquid insecticide. • First use Bifen LP. This is a granular insecticide that works through a slow release process, and is labeled to kill many different pests. • Use this with either a push or hand spreader, following label directions for proper usage rates. Broadcast this over the entire yard. Also apply the Bifen granules to flower and mulch beds. • Next use Reclaim IT. This is a liquid insecticide concentrate that will repel and kill any kissing bugs around your home. Reclaim can also be used to treat a wide variety of pests and offers a residual of up to ninety days. • Following label directions, broadcast Reclaim over areas you treated with the Bifen LP. This will not only give ample coverage, but the liquid spray will activate the Bifen granules, performing one-two punch. Also spray entry points to the home such as, around windows, around doors, weep holes, or where pipes penetrate the wall. • Next, treat indoors with Fipro aerosol. This is a foaming aerosol that is labeled to kill many invading pests, even wood destroying insects. Apply this in voids, cracks, and crevices around windows, doors, or any wall voids. The foam will expand at a thirty-to-one ratio for deep application and leaves a long lasting residual. • Prevent kissing bugs from returning by trimming back any vegetation against the house, remove yard debris, seal up the entry points, and be sure to re-apply Bifen LP and Reclaim IT every ninety days for continued control. • The kissing bug can be a dangerous pest, but you can control easily with these professional products and tips from Solutions Pest and Lawn.
