Autodesk Fusion 360 QUICK TIP Custom Threads

In this Autodesk Fusion 360 Quick Tip video, Sam Birchenough from BRCHN Design House is going to demonstrate how to model custom threads within Fusion 360 using a Porsche fuel cap as an example. An important thing to remember with using a photo reference: you need to shoot it with a long lens or make sure you correct for lens distortion in post-processing, as any distortion might negatively impact geometric accuracy. To start, we create a cylinder equal to the outside diameter of our threads. If we use the standard thread tool in Fusion 360, we are presented with standard options that aren’t right for this task. Instead, we will be using the coil tool. We’ll add a coil to the bottom of this fuel cap equal to the outside diameter and drag it into place. It's important to pay attention to the revolution and number of revolutions. We will be using a triangular internal cut and we can adjust the section size later. We will drag the thread such that the lines are parallel with the thread lines in the photo. Next, we are going to use the fillet tool to round this outside edge and mimic the radius of the Porsche fuel cap threads. Next, we’re going to add a much larger radius to the inside of our thread but it looks like our section size is a little large, because the inner diameter of this thread is slightly less than the fuel cap. We can add a fillet at the bottom here to round over that edge, just like in the original cap, and we're off to a good start.
