OLD CHURCH SLAVONIC LANGUAGE: Codex Zographensis. Old Church Slavic, Old Church Slavonic (Codex Zographensis, Tetraevangelium Zographense, Codex Petropolitanus) is the oldest preserved and discovered gospel in the first Slavic literary language - Old Church Slavonic. It lies at the beginning of the literature of all Slavs (this is de facto first book written in a slavic language). It was written in the late X. or early XI. century in the famous First Bulgarian Empire, which then included Macedonia, where the book was probably written. Another option is the northeastern Bulgarian area. It consists of 303 pages, of which 288 are written in round Glagolitic script. It contains the Gospel according to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and at the end it has a synaxar, ie. short biographies of saints. This incredibly valuable historical source was found in 1848 by the Croatian writer, diplomat, all-Slavic patriot and creator of the Croatian anthem Antun Mihanović (1796-1861) in the Bulgarian Orthodox monastery of Zograf on Mount Athos. Zograf monks presented Codex Zographensis to the Tsar of Slavic Russia, Alexander II. That is why today it is kept in St. Petersburg in the Saltykov-Shchedrin State Library. There it was researched by another great Slavic patriot and great-great-grandfather of the history professor (dr. sc. Neven Budak) under whom I received my master's degree, Vatroslav Jagić (1838-1923). The world is small :) He published it in Berlin in 1879. • Codex Zographensis is one of the so-called canonical sources of the Old Slavonic language. The language in the source is quite archaic, especially in the area of phonetics, more in its second part than in the first. However, it already shows some features of the slavicOld Bulgarian language. Sometimes jeres are mixed, i.e., ъ and ь are not written in the places where we would expect them to be. It seems that the pronunciation of jat is most similar to the situation in today's Bulgarian Slavic language, ie. low, sounding closer to ja , so the jat ě or ѣ is in the place where according to the pronunciation it should be a . • !!!
