CANCER Research has a Replication Crisis

You may have heard of a replication crisis in psychology research, but unfortunately, recent studies indicate that it also extends to cancer research. Failure to replicate scientific results can be demoralizing for individual researchers but they also pose an existential threat to science advancement. This is especially true for something as critical to society as cancer research. A recently published study from the Reproducibility Project: Cancer Biology team sought to understand the degree to which cancer research is replicable and, as we discuss in the video, the results are discouraging. • What should we take away from this? That cancer research is a waste of time or has become fundamentally corrupt? NO! There is definitely a lot to learn from this study, but condemning cancer research as a whole is definitely NOT the answer. One possible conclusion is that we need to become more sophisticated at interpreting scientific research results and put in place new measures to ensure reliability. Another implication is that we probably need some major changes to science culture overall. Scientists should work harder to encourage other scientists to replicate their results and be as open as possible in regards their methods. This is probably easier said than done, but we need to make a start and the way to make a start is to identify the problem and be honest about it.
