Masdar City is Abu Dhabi's attempt to create a greenprint for the rest of the world, costing the government US$15 billion. While some energy needed for running the city is drawn from the national grid, a large portion is generated by a solar plant adjacent to the city and solar panels located on rooftops. The effort offsets more than 15,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year, equivalent to taking more than 3,000 cars off the road. Masdar City’s design, which takes inspiration from traditional Arab architecture, includes low-rise buildings, narrow streets made for walking, and strategically-placed shaded areas to save energy and allow more natural light. CNA's Julie Yoo looks at the grand plan and the challenges it involves. • Subscribe to our channel here: https://cna.asia/youtubesub • Subscribe to our news service for must-read stories: • Telegram - https://cna.asia/telegram • WhatsApp - https://cna.asia/whatsapp • Follow us: • CNA: https://cna.asia • CNA Lifestyle: http://www.cnalifestyle.com • Facebook: / channelnewsasia • Instagram: / channelnewsasia • Twitter: / channelnewsasia • TikTok: / channelnewsasia
