I actually did a way better version about 2 months ago, check it out here • https://mega.nz/#!l2p10C4Y!kBYLCpnH8s... • • Doing a full on remaster of this album is my #1 dream project. (hint hint) I love this album, but let's face it, it sounds terrible. The mastering is squashed, badly EQ'd, and messy. It's actually painful to listen to. And I don't mean that in an audio snob way. It is so harsh it actually causes ear fatigue. Anywho, onto my efforts to restore it a bit. • When mastering an album you generally have 4 major tools at your disposal: compression, limiting, spatial processing, and EQ. This is an oversimplification, but you'll see my point in a second. This album is over-compressed and limited to the point of almost being white noise. So I couldn't use those 2 tools. Spatial processing wouldn't do much here, as it is a very straightforward metal mix. So that leaves me with just EQ and why calling this version a remaster is a bit of a misnomer. I EQ'd the crap out of this album. De-harshed the highs, added clarity to the mids, de-mudded the upper-lows and added beef to the extreme low octaves. Given that EQ is all i had to work with, I think it turned out pretty darn good. I managed to take a nearly un-listenable album and make it clearer and easier on the ears. Imagine how awesome this album could sound with a full on remaster. A man can dream, can't he? • Here is the TL/DR version: • Gains - clarity and definition across the board, you can now crank it up without the highs cutting your eardrums in half • Losses - about 3db in overall volume and I feel like the snare gets lost a bit. • I'd say its a worthwhile trade-off. • this album is a classic by a fantastic band, go support them and buy some merch! • All remastered music posted here is for the purposes of entertainment and experimentation only. I am simply exploring modern mastering techniques and their effect on great albums from various eras. I love these bands and their music and am in no way seeking to monetize anything about this.
