Our views on ingredient contaminations when choosing products

Here are my thoughts on contaminants... • Risk of contaminants is a top reason why I also consider the pre-cursor ingredient when determining if an ingredient will be on my no-no list or not. • Examples: • 1️⃣ 1,2 Hexanediol - EWG rates this as a 1, but this ingredient is made with 1-HEXENE, a VOC that is a know neurotoxin and reproductive toxin. Besides the fact that this is exposing the workers handling these ingredients, there is no guarantee that hexene is completely removed. Maybe they made it to 96% purity, maybe 99%. You won't know because most brands will not disclose this. It is possible to make 1,2 Hexanediol with a different compound, but that compound is STILL derived from petroleum. I don't allow petrochemicals at Crunchy Co, so it's a pass ✌️ • 2️⃣ Ethoxylated ingredients like Polysorbates and some Surfactants - Ethoxylated ingredients carry the risk of residuals of ethylene oxide (group 1 carcinogen) or 1,4 dioxane (probable carcinogen). Considering the gravity of the contamination, I do not allow ethoxylated ingredients at Crunchy Co. Is it possible the brand has purified the ingredient enough to have no concern? Possibly, but most won't publicly disclose those test results. And the risk presents itself every time a batch is made. Who is to say it's perfect every time? • I rather not deal with this uncertainty, ESPECIALLY when there ARE wonderful small brands out there making amazing products without these concerns. 😊 • 💡 Learned something new and want to learn more?
