Belonging to the Frog genus Notobatrachus degiustoi, the specimen was discovered within strata attributed to the La Matilde Formation, indicating that the specimen existed during the Toarcian stage of the Middle Jurassic. This discovery not only represents the oldest-known tadpole but also the earliest stem-anuran larva. Through Morphological disparity and Morphometric analyses, Mariana Chuliver and her research team identified soft tissues exhibiting features associated with the filter-feeding mechanism characteristic found present within modern tadpoles. Additionally, it was noted that both the larval and adult stages attained considerable sizes, offering evidence of gigantism within tadpoles of stem-anuran lineages. These discoveries led the research team to conclude that an early establishment of a biphasic life cycle most likely occurred in the evolutionary history of stem-anurans. • References • John Cumming.
