Its estimated population in 2021 is 522,357 inhabitants, making it the 51st most populous municipality in Brazil and the fifth most populous in the North Region . According to the Tupinologist Eduardo de Almeida Navarro , however, the toponym Macapá originates from the northern general language term macapaba , which means place of macabas ( macaba , macaba + aba , place). [ 11 ] According to the Aurélio Dictionary , macaba is a fruit tree in the backlands . [ 12 ]
